Simon's #9 - May '08
twobob's resident deckmeister Simon No 9 gives us the top 9 tracks in his bag this month
1. Portishead: Third
Never thought I'd be raving about a new Portishead album. Its scary to think how long its been since "Dummy", less hip hop (no wiki-wik scratching) and more experimental, the relentless, pile driver beats of "machine gun" alone will floor you.
2. The Juan Maclean: Happy House
Last year was all about LCD Soundsystem and Nancy from the band adds vocals to this cosmic disco epic that just builds and builds. Perhaps too housey for some but just gets away with it like only the DFA can.
3. Be your own pet: Get awkward
Like those kids who hang around at the bus stop giving you evils... but imagine if they were really into the dead kennedys and the cramps... just imagine...
4. UNKLE feat. Josh Homme: Restless
Bit late to this one as I didn’t get last years lp (which also featured current faves Black mountain).the coolest GinGer in rock lends his vocal talents to this one.
5. Andrew Weatherall: Feathers
Recently featured on some advert, hey people gotta eat, some people are greedy though (moby, I'm looking in you’re direction) this straddles genre's like all best music should.
6. Clinic: Do it!
The men in masks travel back in time (having kidnapped David Yow) to teach The Byrds a little thing called DISTORTION
7. Grosvenor: Drive your car
Every other blog will go on about how he was nearly/used to be in Hot Chip but we (ie lou lou) knows this guy from The Moog! Yeah Bexley old school bitchez etc...
8. The Breeders: Mountain battles
Kim Deal takes two of the best recent band names (see previous) and makes a new album. frankly all bands should leave about six years between records because then it becomes an event, will we ever tire of her basslines??
9? Evil Nine: They live
No that's it? buy mike leighs naked on dvd, or seek out Society on vhs for some some sicko late 80s splatter fx
